Tom Warne Report, 8 March 2013

New York State Thruway Authority – March 5, 2013

The project manager well known for the quick replacement of the collapsed I-35W bridge in Minneapolis has been hired to manage one of the largest bridge projects in the U.S. The New York State Thruway Authority has announced Peter Sanderson as project manager for the $3.14 billion Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project.

“The project director will be responsible for keeping the New New York Bridge on schedule and within budget, and Peter Sanderson is an outstanding choice for this role because he has extensive experience and a proven track record,” said Thruway Authority Chairman Howard P. Milstein in a statement.

Sanderson will lead a team from HNTB, which has been hired as the owner’s engineer, and design-build contractor Tappan Zee Constructors, a consortium of Fluor, American Bridge Co., Granite Construction Northeast, Traylor Bros. and HDR.

As project manager for the design-build contract to replace I-35W over the Mississippi River in 2007, Sanderson led the opening to the new span 11 months later and three months ahead of schedule. He has over 40 years of experience working on cable-stayed and other large and complex bridges through North America and the world. He has previously worked for Flatiron Construction.

The first of the new Tappan Zee Bridge spans is expected to open in 2016, with the entire project scheduled to be completed in 2018.

Having worked with Peter on the 35W Bridge I can say that he is the right man for this job. TW
