California DOT Breaks Ground on Interchange Project to Increase Safety, Reduce Congestion

AASHTO Journal, 12 April 2013

California Department of Transportation last week broke ground on an interchange project in Monterey County that will cut down on the area’s congestion while also making the area safer for drivers.

Caltrans’ $69 million project will remove three intersections on U.S. Highway 101 and replace them with a new interchange, located near Red Barn at San Juan Road and U.S. 101. The roadway near the new interchange carries more than 60,000 vehicles per day.

“One of the biggest benefits of this project is that by eliminating the intersections, we’re making this section of 101 safer while at the same time upgrading it from an expressway to a freeway,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty in a statement.

The project will be partially funded through $10 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding and $28 million from California’s Proposition 1B (formally titled Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality, and Port Security Bond Act of 2006).

Caltrans expects the project to be completed in 2014.
