Green Bay Interstate Bridge is Closed Due to Sagging

Tom Warne Report, 28 September 2013

Associated Press – September 26, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Officials in Wisconsin have reported that the bridge connecting I-43 over the Fox River in Green Bay has been closed indefinitely following the settling of a concrete support pier by more than 2 feet.

The Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge was closed Wednesday following the discovery of a long deep dip in the pavement.

Gov. Scott Walker said the bridge will be fixed, because of its importance to northwestern Wisconsin’s economy. State Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb said the bridge is not in danger of collapsing.

By happenstance only, I was driving through Green Bay when the bridge problem was discovered. Learning about it from locals in a small town outside of Green Bay provided an interesting perspective. They immediately began speculating how they might need to change aspects of their lives to adapt to a new reality without the interstate. It reminded me how integral transportation infrastructure is in the lives of our customers. JN
