AASHTO Releases New Bridge Inspection Manual

AASHTO Journal, 6 December 2013

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has just released the Manual for Bridge Element Inspection, 1st Edition, developed by the AASHTO Highways Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures.

This new bridge inspection manual is a reference for standardized element definitions, element quantity calculations, and condition state definitions and is designed to assist state transportation departments and other agencies that perform bridge inspection in evaluating the condition of bridges in a simple, effective way. The manual replaces two previous AASHTO bridge inspection publications—the AASHTO Guide to Commonly Recognized Structural Elements (1994) and the AASHTO Guide Manual for Bridge Element Inspection (2011).

The manual is available in print (Print Item Code: MBEI-1) or as an online downloadable PDF (Online Download Item Code: MBEI-1-UL) at a cost of $192, or $160 for AASHTO member organizations. Copies may be ordered from the AASHTO Bookstore by phone at 800-231-3475 or online at bookstore.transportation.org.

Questions about the Manual for Bridge Element Inspection should be directed to Kelley Rehm, staff liaison to the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, at krehm AT aashto.org or Carolyn Toye, publications marketing and production specialist, at ctoye AT aashto.org.
