In states where salt is used for deicing, bridge shoulder piers and columns are often damaged by snow removal and deicing materials. This results in frequent, costly repairs that do not effectively preserve the infrastructure.
Poly Salt Armor offers a modular design that wraps around the column with overlapping joints both horizontally and vertically. It is made from patented high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a UV inhibitor to ensure durability. The design features male-female joints for secure assembly and stand-offs that allow air circulation around the original concrete, preserving the column’s integrity throughout its lifecycle.

Why is it innovative?
Poly Salt Armor’s (PSA) durable, plastic shields surround bridge pier columns and extend their life by eliminating the opportunity for moisture holding, corrosive, deicing treatments to adhere to the concrete surface. Made of UV-treated, recyclable plastic (HDPE) with a 20+-year expected lifecycle, PSA preventative maintenance shields install in 20-30 minutes with a small crew and NO heavy equipment, allow for easy inspection, and reduce the need for expensive, hazardous and weather-dependent applications. The PSA shields are 100% recyclable and made in the USA. Poly Salt Armor’s modular, interlocking shields wrap around bridge piers as a “floating” system, allowing the concrete to breathe. Three (3) PSA shields are joined together around a pier using nuts and bolts, that form a layer. 3 layers tall to cover the critical Splash Zone.

What would a field demonstration entail?
Installation can be completed with a small crew and requires no heavy equipment. The standard process requires only 20-30 minutes per column.
Inspection Process: Easily removed panels allow for annual inspections in a short period of time. Once the inspection process is complete, the individual panels are easily replaced without removing the entire assembly. Windows/openings at the base, provide for visual inspection of any fallen debris or decay.
