Program Summary
TPO AD is an alternative to conventional thin polymer multi-layer bridge deck overlay systems that combines the performance of Kwik Bond’s legendary preservation and safety systems to advance the functionality within the thin polymer overlay class. A High Molecular Weight Methacrylate (HMWM) first layer saturates the substrate concrete permanently repairing cracks and restores flexural continuity within the bridge deck while promoting adhesion of the composite TPO AD system. The hybrid polyester copolymer binder resin second layer further protects the bridge deck and secures a durable, high friction calcined-bauxite broadcast aggregate, or aggregate of your choice.

Detailed Description of Program
Describe your product/technology:
Bridge owners and contractors use TPO as a protective method for sealing bridge decks from the day-to-day environment. Traditional TPO’s are applied in a multilayered system on the deck thereby offering no treatment to the deck surface. TPO-AD utilizes two products from Kwik Bond Polymers that are synthesized and provide deck rehabilitation and surface protection at the same time. This system offers reduced chloride penetration and increased friction over traditional multilayer systems.
Why is it innovative?
TPO-AD utilizes a new type of deck treatment called the Duplex System, or two layers that offer different functions with compatibility. What you get is bridge deck rehabilitation with HMWM and then deck protection with hybrid polyester binder resin. This technology offers you bonded (to the deck) protection from the elements while giving you a long-lasting thin polymer overlay.
What would a field demonstration entail?
A field demonstration would be best suited for a bridge deck that is 1-5 years old with some cracking and a few spalls. All spalls must be repaired and allowed to be cured. Abrasive Blasting is required for the deck and any areas not accessible to the shot blaster are sand blasted, then blown off with high pressure air. The first layer of HMWM is applied by hand, once this layer has had the opportunity to sit for a few minutes then the second layer is applied (wet on wet) to the thickness of 50-60 mils. Then apply the rock of choice (Calcined Bauxite, Granite, or Limestone). Allow entire mix to dry (approximately 2 hours), sweep off excess rock and open to traffic.
TPO-AD System Description:
TPO-AD consists of High Molecular Weight Methacrylate (HMWM) first layer followed by a Polyester resins second layer with a broadcast aggregate.
- Layer 1: KBP ProPrime HMWM
- Layer 2: KBP Polyester + Aggregate
