ITD Program: MPC Concrete (Phoscrete)

Program Summary

Phoscrete MPC marks a significant step forward in structural concrete repair with its innovative magnesium phosphate cement technology. MPC delivers rapid return to service and strong bond to Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and to itself with no cold joints and no off gassing. Phoscrete’s two-component MPC formulations resist chloride intrusion, freeze-thaw damage, and combat corrosion. Ideal for bridge deck patching, expansion joint nosings, and vertical and overhead concrete repairs, MPC formulas work well even in extreme temperatures to durably preserve concrete infrastructure.

Detailed Description of Program

Describe your product/technology:
Phoscrete MPC advances structural concrete repair with its next-generation magnesium phosphate cement technology. Designed for fast application and strong adhesion to concrete, Phoscrete MPC is a structural cementitious concrete that quickly returns structures to service. The material is engineered to withstand harsh environmental conditions, resisting chloride intrusion and freeze-thaw cycles, and effectively converts existing corrosion on rebar into a more stable compound, reducing the risk of further corrosion. Phoscrete MPC is applicable for a range of repair scenarios and can be mixed in a bucket or a large mixer, then pour-, pump-, or spray- applied.

Why is it innovative?
Speedy Return to Service:
The rapid hardening time of Phoscrete MPC allows more repairs in less time, allowing for the application of sealants and coatings within the same lane closure, minimizing traffic disruption.

Enduring Bond Strength: Phoscrete MPC delivers strong and durable bonds to both Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) substrates and to itself, with no cold joints.

Climate Resilience: Built to perform in extreme climates, Phoscrete MPC sets quickly both in sub-freezing temperatures, and delivers sufficient working time for hot weather installations.

Corrosion Resistance: In the presence of corroded rebar, Phoscrete MPC reacts with iron oxide (rust) to form ferric phosphate and acts to prevent the ring anode (halo) effect.

Versatile Repair Applications: Phoscrete MPC suits a variety of repair needs, including:

  • Bridge Deck Patching: Repairs spalls quickly, reinforcing the deck’s structural capacity.
  • Expansion Joint Nosings: Full joint installation or damaged header repairs. MPC sets quickly to allow installation of the joint seal within the same lane closure.
  • Vertical and Overhead Repairs: Provides exceptional hold for gravity-defying applications, ensuring longevity of structural repairs, both hand-packed and spray-applied (shotcrete).

What would a field demonstration entail?
A practical demonstration of Phoscrete MPC includes the mixing and application processes for the repair of a damaged concrete structure. Owners would observe the ease of application of one or more of Phoscrete MPC formulas and application methods, monitoring rapid hardening, trowel finishing, and cleanup with water. Scheduled follow-ups would provide insight into the MPC’s long-term resilience and durability.

Aligned with ITD’s mission, Phoscrete MPC is recognized for its innovative approach to concrete repair, contributing to the extension of infrastructure service life.
