Peer Exchange Report on Corrosion Prevention and Mitigation for Highway Bridges
Peer Exchange Report on Corrosion Prevention and Mitigation for Highway Bridges (12/06/23)The Government Accountability Office in their report Highway Bridges: Federal Highway Administration Could Better Assist States with Information on Corrosion Practices, GA0-21-104249 made a recommendation to FHWA to include activities in ongoing bridge preservation efforts, such as peer exchanges and case studies that focus on addressing the challenges State DOTs face with determining the circumstances under which specific corrosion practices and materials are most effective. To implement GAO’s recommendation from the report, FHWA conducted two regional peer exchanges: (1) for the Midwest States which have environments with arid conditions or that experience frequent freeze/thaw cycles and use de-icing chemicals on their highway bridges, and (2) for the Northeast, Southeast, and West States which have environments that experience freeze/thaw cycles or have highway bridges exposed to a saltwater environment. We have published the report and it can be downloaded from this link. |

Prioritizing Preservation for Locally Owned Bridges
Prioritizing Preservation for Locally Owned Bridges (6/1/22)This report analyzed how local agency bridge owners prioritize preservation for their bridge inventory. This analysis uses data from a survey of approximately 500 local agency bridge owners representing tens of thousands of bridges and follow up interviews with select respondents. The report was able to highlight project selection processes for bridge preservation activities including funding sources, document typical bridge preservation actions, bridge asset management practices, successes and challenges to funding preservation and the status of the agencies bridge preservation program. National Bridge Inspection Standards (5/6/22)This final rule updates the FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) for highway bridges. |
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (4/8/22)The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) (Public Law 117-58, also known as the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law”) is a once-in-a-generation investment in our infrastructure that will help grow the economy, enhance U.S. competitiveness, create good jobs, and build our safe, resilient, and equitable transportation future. |
LTBP Bridge Portal
LTBP Bridge PortalThe FHWA LTBP Bridge Portal is the new bridge analysis site, with improved performance and experience. The site features regular and advanced searches to find the information you need. |
Bridge Preservation Site
Bridge Preservation SiteThe new FHWA Bridge Preservation Site serves as a toolbox containing bridge-related links organized in four sections, viz., Legislation & Policies; Bridge Management; Bridge Preservation Treatments; and Research & Development. |
“Bridge Preservation Video”
“Bridge Preservation Video”Bridge Preservation – Bridge owners across the United States face significant challenges in addressing the needs of their aging infrastructure. This video explains bridge preservation activities and which ones qualify for Federal funding. Also, learn how transportation agencies in four states established their bridge preservation programs and what advice they have for other agencies. |
FHWA Technical Advisory T5140.34 — “Use and Inspection of Adhesive Anchors in Federal-Aid Projects”
FHWA Technical Advisory T5140.34 — “Use and Inspection of Adhesive Anchors in Federal-Aid Projects”This is the third issue of this technical advisory. The original (T 5140.26) was issued after the investigation into the ceiling panel collapse in the I-90 Seaport Connector Tunnel in Boston, MA was complete. The primary cause of that failure was the use of a “fast set” epoxy with inadequate creep resistance. A contributing factor was the irregular installation of the anchors due to the challenges associated with installing anchors overhead. The second issue of this technical advisory provided an expanded list of specific epoxies that were deemed to be “fast set.” The first two technical advisories strongly discouraged the use of adhesive anchors, in particular those with “fast set” epoxies. At the time, FHWA had concerns with how the industry regulated itself in terms of design and qualification of adhesive anchor systems, and the qualification of installers or lack thereof. Since the original technical advisory was issued, two National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) studies have been completed, and the industry and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) have made significant advancements on regulating adhesive anchor systems and installation. The FHWA has reevaluated its position on the use of adhesive anchor systems as a result. |
