MWBPP Working Groups

From time to time, a Partnership’s Board or Steering Committee may appoint working groups of persons possessing special knowledge or expertise for the development of programs, tasks, and activities, or to perform other actions which promote the objectives of the Partnership.

For their duration, each of the working groups will have a leader(s), a defined work scope, a list of deliverable items, and an expected completion date.

MWBPP Working Group “Bridge Inspection Program Manager (BIPM) Working Group”

Work Team State Agency Program Managers, NCPP Staff and FHWA Representatives
Work Scope
  1. The purpose of working group is for state inspection program managers to collaborate on practices or procedures. Discussions and presentations include best practices, innovative technologies, successful policies, staffing structure, inspection roles, and metric compliance.
  2. The committee is also a supportive place to ask questions or provide examples.  FHWA participates to help states understand upcoming initiatives and clarify issues.
Deliverable Products / Expected Completion
  1. Monthly meetings with various topics and round robin discussions or presentations.
  2. Minutes kept by secretary for history.
MWBPP Working Group “Systematic Preventive Maintenance (SPM)”

Work Scope
  1. Outreach to MWBPP States for Status of Programs.  Develop Synthesis of MWBPP states’ SPM plans / agreements / programs.
  2. Develop list of potentially eligible SPM activities.

MWBPP Working Group “Preservation Matrix”

Work Scope
  1. Within the MWBPP states, identify proven bridge preservation techniques and provide networking and contact information for others.
  2. Within the MWBPP states, identify the top five bridge preservation strategies, noting trends and the effectiveness of the applications.

MWBPP Working Group “Annual Meeting Working Group”

MWBPP Working Group “Social Media Development”

Work Scope Formation of a Working Group to develop communication capabilities for the MWBPP by the use of Social Media.

  1. Develop Social Media tools for the MWBPP Webpage.
  2. Increase awareness of Bridge Preservation.
  3. Share Case Histories, Bridge Preservation Initiatives, Bridge Preservation Research, and Bridge Preservation Events using social media tools that are more readily accessed by some.
  4. Work with the NCPP Webmaster to further develop the MWBPP Webpage.
  5. Initiate other Social Media, including LinkedIn.
Deliverable Products / Expected Completion
  1. MWBPP Blog development to produce a draft version for review in July 2014. Consideration of this initiative at the 2014 National Meeting with the objective of promoting it as a National Initiative for all Bridge Preservation Partnerships.
  2. A LinkedIn account for Bridge Preservation has been developed.
  3. The MWBPP Blog was up and running by February 15, 2015.
  4. This Working Group has been Sunset. A National Social Media Working Group has now been formed as a result of this Working Group’s initiatives. Social Media have no boundaries and the initial MWBPP Working Group was a Pilot Working Group, which was expected to evolve from its inception. Members from the four Bridge Partnerships will represent their regions. The MWBPP will continue to have representation, and Report-outs will be made during conference calls and at meetings.

MWBPP Working Group “Midwest Bridge Deterioration Modeling”
Leader(s) Bill Oliva, Wisconsin DOT & Fouad Jaber, Nebraska DOR
Work Scope Develop a select number of bridge deterioration curves for the time-dependent deterioration of bridge elements to be used in making estimates of future conditions and work actions. This effort will pool data and create results that will improve accuracy of various bridge management and asset management applications used by member DOTs, e.g., BrM, Agile Assets, and homegrown. We plan to develop this project as a Transportation Pooled Fund Study (TPF), funded and managed by the MWBPP Work Group.
Deliverable Products / Expected Completion
    1. Element-level and NBI deterioration curves.
    2. Element-level deterioration curves for substructure.
    3. Defect-level deterioration curves.
    4. Explore how bridge deck cracking progresses into delamination.
    5. Determine what type of inspection information (nondestructive testing) Mid-west DOTs have that translates into information on element-level defects, e.g., GPR, Thermograph, etc.
    6. Completion will be in phases.
    7. This Working Group has been Sunset.
