SHRP2 Project on Bridge Service Life Beyond 100 Years is Topic of Next SHRP2 Tuesday Webinar

AASHTO Journal, 20 September 2013

The Transportation Research Board announced it will host a webinar late next month on the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) product “Bridge for Service Life Beyond 100 Years: Innovative Systems, Subsystems, and Components (R19A).”

The “Bridge for Service Life Beyond 100 Years: Innovative Systems, Subsystems, and Components” project produced the “Design Guide for Bridges for Service Life,” which defines procedures to “systematically design new and existing bridges for service life and durability.” Those participating in the SHRP2 webinar discussion on R19A will hear a review of the service life design approach and the current state of practice, an overview of the service life systematic approach and framework, guidelines for application of the guide at a project and program level, benefits assessment of applying the guide, and the project implementation approach.

“Enhancing bridge service life during an era of limited resources has led to the prominence of the design-for-service-life philosophy,” said a news release announcing the upcoming webinar. “The cost of addressing service life issues at the design stage is significantly lower than actions taken during the maintenance and preservation stage. In general, the design-for-service-life approach utilizes individual strategies, each capable of enhancing service life of a particular bridge element that has historically experienced a limited service life.”

Kelley Rehm, program manager for engineering at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, is among the presenters. Also presenting is Oregon Department of Transportation’s Bruce Johnson, Florida International University’s Atorod Azizinamini, Federal Highway Administration’s Anwar Ahmad. TRB’s Jerry DiMaggio will moderate the discussion.

The free webinar will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 2-3:30 p.m. EDT. TRB administers the SHRP2 program under a memorandum of understanding with AASHTO and the Federal Highway Administration.
